Human welfare is the ability to fulfill human purposes.

	When one proposes, as this book does, to use technology to advance
human welfare, one is immediately asked what is human welfare.
We propose to avoid this question by making our goal providing means
whereby people can realize their individual goals - whatever they may
be.

	But what if people are corrupted by materialism and don't want
what they ought to want?  What if they want entertainment instead of
uplift?  What if they want Cadillacs instead of mass transportation?

	Our position is unequivocal.  If that's what people want, then
technology should help them get it.  Anyone is free to urge people to
want something else, but pious lies are not permitted - be they predictions
of disaster or promises of Utopia.
